CEL came on today

Postby kimbowill » May 25th, 2010, 2:17 pm

The CEL came on coming to work today. The car is a 07 with about 11K miles. The CEL is solid not blinking. Anyone know off hand if solid is better or worse then blinking? I kept an eye on the temp gage so make sure the engine wasn't over heating and the car doesn't drive like there is any problem at all. I was wondering if the MX-5 has any particular anomolies I should look into. I just bought a code reader from Amazon which I hope to get in a few days.

On a completely differnt subject, has anyone go karted at Summit Point Karts yet? If not I highly recomend it! I did a 12 hour endurance race this past weeked with 5 buddies and it was great except for the rain. When the track was dry it was so fun. wet track not so much. They are a little disorganized as they are doing a lot of new things but it was the best $150 I've spent in a long while.

Non blinking is better than blinking.

As far as I know, there isn't anything that normally causes the CEL on the NC besides the gas cap. You'll have to wait to see what the code is. Also, your car is still under warranty if it is something non-benign.

When I did their November event (there's threads around here for both enduros) it was monsoon the whole time and I had the time of my life. Of course, that was only 2, not 12 hours- so I understand why YMMV.

I was thinking if the light came on for maintenance. It's due for an oil change so maybe it's more of a maintenance light? not sure if it's equipt with that. I got the car with 8K miles and it had just been serviced. I guess I should just look at the book. Thanks for the reply on the gas cap and the fact that non-blinking is better.

No such service light on the NCs. Trying tightening the gas cap until you get your code reader On some early NCs the gas cap was faulty, and they replaced it with one that had more 'clicks' in it. I thought by 07 they had made the change, but I'm not sure.

Call me crazy, but that sounds like a "add more blinker fluid" kinda fix.

Did you get that off Miataforum? That stuff'll rot your brain.

It does sound kinda crazy, but if I remember correctly, the original gas cap had 6 ratchets per rotation, and the newer one has 12. I'm pretty sure mine is the older one.

I'm not saying that the number of ratchet teeth have anything to do with the fix, but maybe Mazda switched suppliers and the newer design just happened to have more teeth than the old one.

Now that you mention it, the 626 we owned several years ago had a CEL as a result of something to do with the gas cap. My wife, who's memory is better than mine, said a mechanic had to reset something.

just got my code reader from Amazon and went out to read the code which was P0455 Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (Gross Leak/No Flow).

Sounds to me like the gas cap fix might do the trick. I'm going to erase the code right after I tighten the gas cap tomorrow morning.

Thanks for your input:!:
