Diff question

Postby lelkins » February 24th, 2010, 4:51 pm

Hello,

Finally getting around to digging the Miata out last weekend (long story....). It was parked a little bit nose-down and had ice under the rear wheels. I noticed that as I was trying to back it over the layer of ice that the passenger side wheel was spinning and the driver's side wheel certainly didn't seem to be. Could it be a dead differential? (It's a 2000 LS). How can I test the diff to see if it's still working? And how much could this contribute to my not-so-hot autocross times for the last while?

Torsens go fully open when one wheel is close to zero grip.

That's normal behavior for an open-drive (non-limited slip) rear. It's my understanding that one of the limited-slip diffs (I forget which one) loses it limited-slip characteristics after about 70k miles and acts more like an open-drive.

Hello,

Thanks for the response, I didn't realize this diff had an 'ice mode'. And I knew that somewhere in Miata history was one that tended to wear out and stay open, nice to know mine isn't one of them....

Thanks,

I guess it's more of an Ice Blind spot, but yeah, I think that's how it works.
