Armrest vinyl has cracked, good replacement material?

Postby krashnburn63 » July 29th, 2010, 10:19 pm

As noted in the title, the black vinyl has cracked on my armrest, and i am wondering where i might get something to replace it. I want something that looks decent, and is going to be durable enough to last a few years. I saw where katzkin sells a yard of vinyl for 29.99 and discounts the second yard. Any suggestions, and is this fairly easy to do?

What exactly cracked? Is it an easily replaceable part like the lid? If it is, I'd give Chris Windsor a call and see if he has one out of a stripped car. Alternatively, you can buy a new OEM one for $71.

So did mine. I assumed that I could just buy another armrest. On the NA it's a separate component.

The part that cracked is on the door panel, the level surface where the driver's left elbow rests. It seems that the door panel needs to be re-covered or replaced. i went to the link that Nick suggested, and they want 338.00 for a new panel! To their credit, onlineMazda is the only place i've seen selling door panels for the NB. I want to re-cover the panel. I'm hoping it's simply a matter of removing the panel, and then stapling or gluing the new cover in in its place. Looking for suggestions from someone who has done the job, or can recommend a source of reasonably priced (vinyl?) etc. Thanks,

Isn't what you are looking for part number 13 in this photo?

I have replaced door panels many, many times on my Darts, and the junk yard turns out to be the best source by far for both color, and price. There are nearly no Darts left in junk yard, but I would guess planet Miata would have something for you. You might have to wait for the correct color, but it seems it might be worth the wait. I would look at the parts for sale on Miata.net as well. It seems there is always someone parting out a car there.

We work with a local upholstery shop that can do all kinds of neat stuff at great pricing...

Or if you need just a replacement door panel or arm rest, what color? We should have it

I've taken the door panel apart, and it appears that the piece Nick is referring to #13 is a removable piece which begins at and includes the large speaker cover and then creates the pocket, at which point it stops. The door pull, which is also a removable part, attaches above it. Unfortunately for me, the arm rest is part of the main panel. I'll see what Chris Windsor has, and go from there.
