transmission / clutch / flywheel

Postby phranquelynn » June 21st, 2010, 12:46 pm

so my 2000 transmission gave out (see wtb section). just curious if i should go ahead and do the clutch and flywheel at the same time. i believe i have to drop the transmission to do the clutch and flywheel. so it kinda makes sense to do the clutch too. but i have 60k on the car and the clutch feels fine. just curious how long changing the transmission would take and how much more/longer/difficult is the job to do the clutch and flywheel at the same time?

"gave out" ?

I wondered about your WTB posting, how exactly did you kill the indestructible Miata 5-speed? Short of running without oil or physically damaging the thing, I don't know that I've ever heard of an outright failure...

My curiosity mirrors Peter's.

As to your specific question, though- absolutely do the clutch, and have a flywheel on hand so you can make the call once you've seen the old one. Do the rear main seal and pilot bearing too and you'll be good down there for a long time to come.

I know a lightened flywheel will make you a "national" contender. You gotta drive one to believe the difference it makes!.

ProSolo launches/shifting.

I don't know about how indestructible they are I am on my 3rd transmission in my car.

Yeah get a lightweight flywheel and do the clutch (1.6L stuff is lighter weight) while you are in there if you can spend the cash.

Doing the clutch and flywheel will take not much extra time at all since the biggest time part of it is pulling the transmission.

Let me know when you have the new stuff if you need a hand getting it in.

I agree. While the transmission is out anyway, replace whatever you can so you don't have to do it again anytime soon. If you don't want to put a new flywheel in, at least have a new one on hand that you can return if you don't need it.

Has to be a fluid loss situation.
